Features and Benefits of SAF Solid State Starters for Ginning Machinery

Running just a few months out of each year, you must have the maximum up-time with the least maintenance.A soft starter can help tremendously with ginning machine operation because it allows for a soft, gradual, reduced-voltage start-up versus fast, high-voltage start-ups that can cause premature wear and tear on the machinery. Carotron recently installed a pair of 200HP SAF Solid State Starters with full-voltage, across-the-line bypass contactors that are expected to provide the following advantages for the mill’s ginning machine. |
> Minimize AC line inrush current, lowering the demand loading and monthly cost-per-KWH.
> Smooth application of starting torque to greatly reduce across-the-line impact loading on belts and other drive components.
> The ability to run across the line if lightning or an AC line surge were to disable the control electronics.
> Install with minimal wiring changes. Three-in, three-out line connections and a simple two- or three-wire interface to existing control circuits.
> No sacrifice in overall efficiency, since the Integrated Bypass Contactor removes the high-power SCR’s from the current path during continuous running, eliminating the heat loss.
